The History of Matsuri with Dennis Latifovic, SAMURAI Museum Berlin

What does “Matsuri” actually mean – and why do festivals play such an important cultural role in Japan? In this presentation, Dennis Latifovic from the SAMURAI Museum Berlin offers an engaging insight into the history of Japanese matsuri and their significance up to the present day.

Participants will learn how matsuri developed from religious, seasonal, and community-based traditions, and what role shrines, rituals, music, dances, processions, and regional customs play in these festivals.

The presentation invites visitors to experience matsuri not only as colourful celebrations, but also to better understand their historical roots, symbols, and social importance.
