The history of armour is always closely connected to its practical use. No form of armour developed without a purpose: changes in material, construction, and the way armour was worn were always responses to new weapons, changing battle tactics, and social developments.

In this presentation, visitors will gain an engaging overview of the evolution of Japanese armour through the ages – from the early lamellar armour of the Kofun and Heian periods to the impressive Ō-yoroi worn by mounted samurai, and finally to the lighter and more flexible Tōsei Gusoku, which became widespread with the rise of firearms in the 16th century.

The presentation will also explain how these armours were worn, what kind of protection they offered, and what practical advantages they provided on the battlefield. This creates a deeper understanding of how aesthetics, craftsmanship, technique, and martial practice are closely connected in Japanese armour.
